Our Mission

Gaspé, Cradle of Canada has the mission of making known the rich history of the city of Gaspé and its occupants from the First Nations to the present day. To achieve this, it implements conservation, democratization, awareness-raising and mediation actions aimed at a public of all ages, both local and touristic.

A place full of history

To help people discover the importance of Gaspé as the cradle of Canada and to highlight the achievements of its inhabitants.

Cultures, community

To offer a gathering place for the local and tourist population in order to promote the sharing and discovery of the city's cultural heritage.

Project history

Since 2002, the Corporation Gaspé, Cradle of Canada has been working on the development of the Cradle of Canada project. Construction of the site began in the summer of 2012, with the collaboration of the City of Gaspé.

The first goal of this project was to give the citizens of Gaspé access to the river by creating a waterfront park on the York River.

The construction of this site allowed for the addition of a wharf. The redevelopment of the road has freed up space for public gatherings. Thus, this place of interpretation of the history of Gaspé has become a major tourist attraction for the region.

Composed of an original heritage residence and six reconstructed buildings, the site offers a representation of the heart of the village of Gaspé as it was at the beginning of the twentieth century. This complex includes a warehouse, a tavern, a boutique, a general store, a seaplane base, a residence and a naval base.

In each building, there is an interpretation area, made up of old objects from private collections, interpretation panels and historical displays. With works of art and reconstructions from the period, this site offers a vision of the history of Gaspé in a friendly layout accessible to all audiences.

Founder

Mr. Fabien Sinnett is the main architect of the Gaspé, Cradle of Canada project. Fabien's tenacity, commitment and vision led him to create the Gaspé Corporation, Cradle of Canada in 2002.

The idea was to give people a way to learn about the history of Gaspé and to have a gathering place in the heart of downtown, on the waterfront.

He believed in the project and succeeded in rallying people and finding the partners and funds necessary to carry out this unifying project.

Since the inauguration in 2016, the population has taken ownership of the site. The Berceau has become "the heart of the city centre" and is widely frequented by the population and visitors.
